Sitting in the train...
... a word play, making stories
She could not believe it. Underneath the seat in front of her, on the dirty greyish floor, she saw a note. A simple note. Just one word scribbled down on a piece of paper that must have been torn out of a book.
"Your ticket, please?". She was the only person sitting in this compartment, on a bench which was covered with a cheap imitation of green
leather, just as usual for a second class bench in a train. The guard was suddenly standing in front of her, adjusting his peaked cap impatiently, while she was searching for her ticket.
She unpacked her bag, spread newspapers, tissues and candy on the bench where she was sitting. Finally, she found the ticket which must have slipped by accident between page three-hundred-twenty-eight and.. oh well, the numbers are too long for this story, say between pages of her English-German dictionary. The guard took her ticket, muttered something she could not understand, turned around and left.
Slowly, she put back her things into her bag and almost forgot about the note on the floor. Lost in thoughts, or rather sleepy, she looked outside the window. It was dark already and she could not see much. Something like a wire-haired terrier starred back at her, stuck out the tongue just as she did. It was her twin who always appeared in the windows as soon as it got dark.
She stopped looking at her twin, whose uncombed hair was making her upset this day. And there, the note was still lying on the floor. This time she bent down and picked it up. Holding the piece of paper between thumb and forefinger, she tried to read the word. Nothing happened. Maybe sing it? Sounded better. She clapped her hands. What a mysterious word.
The mysterious word
The English-German dictionary which was innocently sleeping on the bench beside her should give the answer. It was rudely woken up. Pages were flipped back and forth. It was not the ticket she was looking for this time. But there, the same word which was written on the piece of paper was also nice and neatly printed in black letters in the book. Fortissimo, meaning ff, the following pages.
"What are the following pages, what will happen next?" She asked herself. Her head tilted, she scribbled down a new word on a piece of paper torn out of her dictionary. In a rush she put it underneath the bench in front of her. Maybe this word could inspire somebody else and fill a following page. And she jumped off the train.
What's the word?
